Original Beeswax Encaustic Paintings
And Curio Boxes
by Carla Marina Marchese
Sensoryscapes are a look into my personal passion for the natural world and beekeeping in the form of miniature eco-systems created inside curio boxes. Foraged objects from nature, my beehives and everyday objects are rescued and brought back to life as visual art to intrigue and provoke curiosity while opening up the larger conversation about our environment.
I was fortuitously was introduced to encaustic painting when I first became a beekeeper; this highly provocative medium has its rich roots in the ancestral land of my forefathers, Italy, specifically the wall paintings at Pompeii. The beauty of encaustics is the unpredictability. To me, there is nothing more seductive than the smell of bees wax melting in my studio.
